COVID-19: Namibia records 171 new cases, one death

Health and Social Services Minister Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia on Monday recorded 171 new COVID-19 cases and one death, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 3 346.

In the daily COVID-19 update Shangula said the death was reported from the Onandjokwe district and occurred on 19 August. The deceased was not vaccinated.

The newly confirmed cases had a gender distribution of 104 females and 67 males, with the youngest being four years old and the oldest, 98 years.

Among the confirmed cases, 117 are learners of which 42 are from Rietquelle High School in the Omaheke Region; 19 from David Sheehama Secondary School in the Omusati Region and 16 from Eputuko Secondary School in the Ohangwena Region. The rest of the cases were from different schools.

“Confirmed cases in learners represented 68.4 per cent of all the reported cases,” said Shangula.

He added that of all the confirmed cases, two people have been vaccinated and one has received two doses while the number of doses received by the other was not indicated.

Ohangwena recorded the highest number of cases at 54, followed by Omaheke with 47 cases, Omusati with 38, Otjozondjupa seven and Kunene and Khomas six cases each. Erongo recorded four cases, Oshana and Oshikoto three cases each, ||Kharas two and Kavango West one.

Namibia on Monday had 2 391 active cases of which 205 were hospitalised and 40 in intensive care units.

In addition, 170 new recoveries were also announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 118 284.

A cumulative number of 202 284 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by 22 August 2021 and 98 301 had been fully vaccinated.
