COVID-19: Namibia records 51 new cases and three deaths

Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia on Tuesday recorded 51 new COVID-19 cases and three deaths, bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 3 349.

In the daily COVID-19 update on Wednesday, Shangula said of the three reported deaths, none of the people had been vaccinated, which once more demonstrates that unvaccinated persons are prone to severe COVID-19 illness and death, he said.

The newly confirmed cases had a gender distribution of 31 females and 20 males, with the youngest being nine months old and the oldest, 82 years.

Among the confirmed cases, nine are learners from different schools, one a student and three healthcare workers. The number of confirmed learners represents 21 per cent of all reported cases. Of the confirmed cases, one person had received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and the rest of the positive individuals had not been vaccinated.

Khomas recorded the highest number of cases at 14, followed by ||Kharas with eight, Oshikoto seven, Omusati six, Erongo six, Oshana four, Otjozondjupa two, Hardap two, Kavango East one and Kunene one.

Namibia on Wednesday had 2 252 active cases, of which 210 were hospitalised and 31 in intensive care units.

In addition, 187 new recoveries were also announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 118 471.

A cumulative number of 204 142 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Tuesday, while 100 944 had been fully vaccinated.
