COVID-19: Namibia records 73 new cases

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula announced that Namibia on Sunday recorded 73 new COVID-19 cases and no deaths, which remain at 3 980.

In the daily update issued on Monday, Shangula said the new cases formed part of 1 121 results and represented a 6.5 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 36 females and 37 males aged between 10 months and 75 years.

The Omaheke Region recorded the highest number of cases at 40, followed by the Erongo Region with 10 cases, Khomas nine, Omusati six, ||Kharas three, Kavango West two while Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa and Zambezi each recorded one case.

Among the confirmed cases are 44 learners of which 37 are from Otjivero Primary School in Gobabis district, three teachers and one healthcare worker.

Two cases have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine and five are fully vaccinated, while 66 cases are not vaccinated, accounting for 90.4 per cent of the total confirmed cases.

Shangula further reported that 442 new recoveries were recorded, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 148 490.

The number of active cases on Sunday stood at 5 989, of which 72 were hospitalised and four admitted to intensive care. Two of the hospitalised cases had received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while five are fully vaccinated. Those in intensive care are not vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 05 February 2022, a total 421 280 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 116 142 had received the single dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

A total of 5 036 are children aged between 12 and 17 years. A total of 245 549 people have received two doses, 361 691 people had completed their vaccination, which translates to 24.6 per cent of the target population. Meanwhile, 18 525 people have received booster doses.
