Omaruru-based Erongo regional sports officer, Berthold Karumendu, who is also Namibia’s middle-distance runner David Dam’s coach, said their speed dynamic training will help them at the upcoming Gaborone International Meet.

The Gaborone International Meet is a World Athletics Continental Tour that is classified in the Bronze category and will be held on 30 April 2022 at the National Stadium, in Gaborone, Botswana.

In an interview with Nampa on Sunday, Karumendu said after competing in three competitions in South Africa over the past week they are back at a training field in Potchefstroom, South Africa working on Dam’s speed dynamic.

“We had a successful training session with local Athletes from North West Athletics and some international athletes who are also training here in Potchefstroom, the likes of Nigel Amos from Botswana and athletes from France are also here,” he said.

He added that the experience and exposure gained from this training session are good for an upcoming athlete like Dam.

“We will have our last training session on Easter Monday before we fly back to Namibia on Tuesday, 19 April 2022 and we are thankful to Namdia who made this trip possible as we now have other coaches who are helping us in preparing for the Gaborone International Meet,” said Karumendu who also stated that competing at Athletics South Africa (ASA) Grand Prix was an eye-opener for Dam who is now more focused on improving himself.

Dam, the 2022 Athletics Namibia 1500 metres national champion competed at two ASA Grand Prix events held at Potchefstroom Stadium and Germiston Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa. He also competed at the Gauteng Senior Athletics Championships in that country.

In his first ASA Grand Prix, the Namibian competed in the B events where he finished third in the 800m race while in his second Grand Prix he was moved to the A race where he finished eighth. He also finished fifth in 1500m at the Central Gauteng Senior Athletics Championships.

Karumedu also said that their trip to Botswana will see several Namibian athletes in the team.
