The Minister of Education, Arts and Culture Anna Nghipondoka says the ministry is proud of hardworking teachers who are continuously reinventing themselves by improving their skills as this benefits learners.

Nghipondoka made the remarks during the announcement of the 2022 provisional results of NSSC Ordinary and Advanced Subsidiary levels full-time and part-time candidates at Eenhana on Friday.

“Self-development should be encouraged and applauded. Teachers must remain students all the time as the more they learn, the better they become in their trade. I am a teacher myself and I have never left the profession even as I stand in front of you right now,” she said.

She however bemoaned the high failure rate saying during her active teaching days, they used to have performance dialogues which helped them identify each other’s weaknesses which would then necessitate required interventions by the principals with the help of regional education officers.

Nghipondoka further noted that most schools nowadays are disorganised and do not have a school culture.

“Put your houses in order and live up to the mandate of this ministry. Use the challenges as stepping stones, do not see them as obstacles, and learn through them as they will always be there. Let us strive to reduce the number of learners going to Namcol because the number of part-time and full-time learners are almost equal,” she said.

Internal efficiency should be taken care of through targeted interventions, Nghipondoka stressed.

The minister took note of the role of the outbreak of COVID-19 which she said reduced teaching/learning time, but stressed that she observed that effective and efficient quality teaching and learning have not been taking place in many of the nation’s schools.

A total of 38 019 full-time students and 32 552 part-time students wrote the ordinary level exams while 8 624 full-time and 591 part-time students wrote the advanced level exams.
