The Erongo Governor’s cup tournament is set to take place from 18 – 22 March 2022 making a return after two years after it was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The tournament, which will be hosted in Swakopmund and which was last played in 2019, will see under-20 participants from all the region’s seven constituencies taking part in football, netball and volleyball and will be held in Swakopmund.

Making the announcement on Wednesday, Erongo Governor, Neville Andre Itope, noted that his office acknowledges that sport touches every aspect of a nation’s ethos and that is a significant part of any nation’s culture, leisure time, health and education.

“The lockdown restrictions have devastated all sectors of our society. Unfortunately, sports have not been spared. We witnessed the closure of all sports activities and competitions negatively impacting on athletes, technical support personnel as well as the broader sporting community and organisations,” he stated.

The governor noted that participation by the region’s various constituency teams in major sporting events such as these takes the region closer to its strategic objective of nation-building and social cohesion.

“I want to commend sports persons who rose to the occasion and joined hands with the government in spreading the messages as part of the campaign and fight against the spread of COVID-19.

The fight is not over yet and we want to encourage athletes to get vaccinated and adhere to the COVID-19 protocols at all times.”

Itope further extended gratitude and appreciation towards the three sporting codes, football, netball and volleyball, as well as the organizing committee, whose task is to support the governor’s office to ensure that the event goes smoothly.

“I strongly believe that the Governor’s Cup 2022 provides the stage for our own football, netball and volleyball players to showcase their talents on home soil,” he said.

Walvis Bay Rural Constituency won both the netball and football trophies in 2019.
