Four soccer players from the Teenager Football Club in Swakopmund have been selected for the developmental soccer trials in Millan, Italy.

The boys, aged 16 and 17 years respectively, were selected last year through trials organised by the Worldwide Scholarship Group, a South African-based organisation and will form part of the group of other boys selected from Southern Africa through the same trials.

Teenager Football Club Manager and Coach, Elvin Majiedt, during a courtesy visit to the Erongo Governor on Wednesday, said the trials in Italy will commence on 06 August 2022, however, they are expected to go through a one-month preparation camp in South Africa from 06 July.

“Our initial departure date for Italy was supposed to be in June, however, due to the fact that the organisers demand a mandatory month’s training in South Africa, we have to adhere to these rules because they have UEFA licensed coaches that will prepare them before their departure to Milan,” Majiedt noted.

Erongo Governor Neville Andre Itope commended the boys and coaches for the efforts they have put in to ensure the boys were selected for such a prominent platform.

“Government, through the Harambee Prosperity Plan, is looking at professionalising sports and when you identify talents among youth, in your capacity as a coach and teacher, you are meeting the government halfway in achieving the plan that it has set up to achieve this goal,” he said.

Two of the boys were part of the Erongo Governor’s Cup which took place in April and also form part of the regional team for the Namibian newspaper cup. Three of them will also be part of the national team to participate in the COSSASA games.
