Haib Minerals recently donated N.dollars 350 000 to the University of Namibia (UNAM) School of Geoscience for the purchasing of machinery.

The UNAM senate in 2017 approved the transformation of the Department of Geology into the School of Geoscience, which started operating from the Southern Campus in 2019.

UNAM in a media statement on Wednesday said the machinery will enable geochemical analysis for academic research and mineral exploration while students will also be able to practice mineral processing methods which are essential for extractive industries.

According to the statement, the donation made through the university foundation stems from a five-year-long partnership between the UNAM and Haib minerals institutions, comprising mainly human development.

UNAM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kenneth Matengu while extending a word of gratitude towards Haib Minerals, in the statement said that it is imperative for the university to closely interact with the private sector to make sure that as a training institution it remains well-versed with what the industry needs.

“We do not just want to train only knowledgeable people, we want to train skilled people who can make a difference in the world and this partnership creates an avenue to attain that vision,” he said.

Haib Minerals’ chief executive officer, John Akwenye, is quoted as saying in the statement: “We are blessed to be associated with UNAM and will continue to assist where we can while calling on other players in the industry to be part of this collaboration.”
