Jonas knocked out of Olympic Games

Namibia’s Olympic Games medal hopeful Junias Jonas was on Saturday knocked out of the competition by his Australian opponent Harry Garside during the round of 16 of the boxing championships.

The rescheduled 2020 Olympic Games are currently underway in Tokyo, Japan.

The Namibian, who is the current International Boxing Association (AIBA) African men’s lightweight champion and the 2018 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, lost his fight 0-5 on the judges’ score cards.

Jonas who also competed at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil where he was defeated by Hassan Amzile of France in the round of 32 found the going tough at his second attempt at winning silverware at the games.

In the first round of their three round bouts, all five judges scored against the Namibian who landed few punches.

The Namibian improved his game in the second round, throwing more punches, but only two of the three judges scored in his favour. In the third round, Jonas landed few punches once more and two of the three judges scored in favour of his opponent as the Namibian boxer saw his dream of winning an Olympic medal come to an end.

Team Namibia is yet to win a medal at this year’s championships.
