The Kavango West Region on Thursday celebrated Heritage Week together with the rest of the country at the Nkurenku Expo site.

Heritage Week is celebrated under the theme ‘Unity in Diversity.’

Speaking at the event, the Director of Education in the region Pontianus Musore said the week encourages all Namibians to celebrate and commit themselves to preserve the country’s natural and cultural resources.

The week further encourages Namibians to keep culture alive and to pass on inherited traditions and knowledge to the future generation to come, he said.

The day, he noted reminds Namibians that all forms of cultural heritage are valued as equal in importance and thus promotes understanding across diverse communities.

Musore said all schools in his region have been celebrating heritage week for the whole month of September.

The official event was celebrated by showcasing various cultural groups and dances, traditional food as well as various cultural items.

On his part, Ukwangali Hompa Eugene Kudumo Siwombe said cultural heritage should be taught to the youth and be instilled while they are still young.

He called on the ministry of education as well as various traditional authorities to find ways how to continue strengthening cultural norms and ethos.

Siwombe also called on the region and all Namibians to appreciate and visit heritage attractions in the region, as this can play an important role in nation-building and building unity in diversity.
