Chairperson of the Kavango East Regional Council, Damian Maghambayi has called on residents from Muroro village in the Mashare Constituency not to take the law into their own hands by attempting to forcefully close down the regional councillor’s office.

Maghambayi said this at a press conference in Rundu on Tuesday following an incident on Friday, where some residents from Muroro village had to be stopped by the Namibian Police Force as they wanted to forcefully close down the Mashare Constituency councillor, Philip Mavara’s office situated in that constituency.

The group from Muroro accused the councillor of failing to perform and execute his duties as a councillor since he was sworn in, in 2015. They charged that the councillor does not call the community members for meetings and has not brought development since he took office.

“I urge the community of Mashare not to take the law into their own hands but to holistically address their concerns in a peaceful manner and to engage my office accordingly,” Maghambayi said.

He explained that in the event Mavara is not found in his constituency, he is performing his duties in the National Council in terms of Section 28 of the Regional Councils Act.

He said the Namibian Constitution provides for fundamental freedoms to all persons, thus the councillor should be given a chance to be heard.

Maghambayi said the concerned residents have invited him to witness an event that will take place on 28 April, before stating the purpose of the event was not mentioned to him nor the venue.

Maghambayi called on the aggrieved community to present their case in a peaceful manner in order for the regional council to be able to establish grounds on how to address their concerns.

The chairperson meanwhile urged regional councillors to utilise the development coordinating committees such as the village development committee and the constituency development committee, to enhance development agendas in their respective constituencies.
