The Ministry of Mines and Energy recorded an earthquake approximately 20 kilometres northwest of Ariamsvlei in the ||Kharas Region Sunday morning.

A statement availed to the media on Monday said the event was recorded at 05h55 on three seismic stations of the Namibia Seismology Network at Windhoek, Kamanjab and Rundu and four others from the South Africa seismic network.

“The earthquake was shallow at a depth of less than 15 kilometres and registered a preliminary local magnitude of 4.2. A team of geoscientists will be dispatched to the affected area to assess the impacts of the event,” said the statement.

The ministry advised people who find themselves in the area to take precautionary measures in case another earthquake occurred.
