MTC warns against false SIM registration claims on social media

Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) has warned the public to disregard social media posts that claim to explain how MTC customers can register their SIM cards using a short code in order to avoid long queues.

MTC in a statement on Tuesday said it is not possible to complete the required SIM registration process via SMS using the short code *68966# as indicated in the social media post. Registration can only be done in person by MTC SIM registration representatives at mobile homes or during one of the company’s mobile field campaigns.

MTC said it had been made aware of a social media post that advised users to avoid long lines by registering their SIM cards by dialling the short code *68966#.

It said while the short code is an MTC code, it is used for a service provided by MTC known as Electronic Voucher (E-Voucher).

Customers register for this service by dialling the short code *68966#, according to the statement, and are then given access to the MTC E-Voucher registration platform, where they can become online airtime resellers. The platform is only intended for use by third-party dealers who sell MTC airtime online.

The statement further indicated that there are members of the public masquerading as MTC officials who go door to door, including to care facilities such as old age homes and care homes, masquerading as MTC officials conducting SIM registrations. They then collect people’s identity cards and charge them for the said exercise.

“Please note that this is not permitted and SIM registration is only done in person, where you either present yourself at an MTC registration centre in your area or at your nearest mobile home,” it said.
