Former governor of the Ohangwena Region, Usko Nghaamwa, has rejected the idea of naming the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST) newly launched campus in Eenhana after him, saying there are more deserving people than him.

This comes after Nghaamwa pledged N.dollars 100 000 from his personal account to the new campus and authorised a donation of N.dollars 10 000 from the Swapo Party Ohangwena branch, where he is the treasurer. He promised to give the money on 30 October 2021, which is among many contributions he made towards education in the region.

In an interview with Nampa on Tuesday, Nghaamwa said that if he accepted the idea of naming the campus after him, then it will be like he is buying the name with the donations he made. Therefore, it’s better to name the campus after somebody else from the region who also played a significant role in the area.

“It is not necessary to name the campus after me. We have a lot of liberation struggle heroes from this region who did good things. I think they deserve to be named after the campus more than me,” said Nghaamwa.

He added that he had also rejected the remaining of a school hostel he built at Omungwelume, and only accepted it when the school management insisted.

Popular Democratic Movement national spokesperson, Hidipo Hamata, who is based in Ohangwena, told Nampa in an interview that Nghaamwa deserved to be celebrated and honoured while he is still alive for the contributions he has made to education in the region.

Hamata said the former governor, who is also a businessman, has been donating money and various educational items to different schools in the region, because he wants what is best for Namibian children.

“He has done so much for the region, and not just the Ohangwena Region but countrywide. He built two schools’ hostels in Omungwelume and another one in Eenhana from his own pocket, and he also played a role in bringing that NUST campus to Ohangwena. Now, kids from the ||Kharas Region can come and study here, even kids from Angola can now study here. We are grateful for what he has done for the region,” said Hamata.
