The memorial service for the former Ndilimani Cultural Group driver and War Veteran, Benediktus Johannes Nkundu, will be held at the Mururani village in the Kavango West Region’s Mankumpi Constituency on Wednesday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) said Nkundu died on 19 March 2022 at the age of 80.

He will be buried at Siya Village cemetery in the Kapako Constituency on Thursday.

Nkundu joined the Swapo Party in 1972 and mobilised Namibians to join the liberation struggle.

In 1974 he went into exile, where he joined the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) and in the same year started his military training at Kasapa military camp in Angola, which he completed the following year.

In 1976, Nkundu together with other PLAN combatants was sent to the battlefield where he sustained injuries after the vehicle he was in drove over a landmine.

‘After recovering from the injuries, Nkundu returned to his duties of transporting food to the refugee camps,’ the ministry said.

He was repatriated back to Namibia in 1989 and in the same year, the Swapo Party appointed him as Ndilimani Cultural Group’s driver.

In 1993, he worked for the Development Brigade Cooperation as a driver until his retirement in 1997.

Meanwhile, President Hage Geingob on Tuesday conferred an honor of an official funeral on the late Nkundu.
