The Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (NORED) has pledged to support Namibian sprinters Christine Mboma and Beatrice Masilingi by supplying electricity to the houses MTC will construct for them.

Last month ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics where Mboma won a silver medal, MTC sponsored the sprint sensations with a total N.dollars 2 million each of which N.dollars 300 000 for each will be used to construct the houses.

In a letter on 09 August 2021 to Fanuel Kapapero, the chairperson of the sponsorship technical committee for the two athletes, NORED Chief Executive Officer Fillemon Nakashole commended the Kavango East Regional Council on its initiative to mobilise resources for the athletes.

Nakashole said the athletes did well at the just-ended Olympics in Japan and said it is in this respect that he confirmed NORED’s support for the athletes by supplying electricity to their homes.

NORED’s public relations officer Simon Lukas confirmed the electrification, noting that more information will be shared at a later stage.

Deputy Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Emma Kantema-Gaomas who has been involved in the activities pertaining to the athletes also confirmed that NORED pledged to electrify Mboma’s house which will be built at her homestead at Mbwata village.

She said as for Masilingi, the ministry submitted a request for the Rundu Town Council to give her a plot as there are disputes at the current plot where she lives with her grandmother in the Kehemu informal settlement.

Kantema-Gaomas said the mayor of Rundu, Gabriel Kanyanga acknowledged receiving the request and informed her that the council is busy processing it.

Kanyanga told Nampa the submission to donate plots to the athletes was made during a council meeting held on Tuesday.

“We however identified plot 2918 which is situated in the Kaisosi informal settlement. Extension 9. This plot belongs to the town council and was left vacant for future development,” he said.

He said the plot has a measurement of 1 248 square metres and will be divided between the two athletes.

The mayor said by next week the resolution taken will be submitted to the line minister for approval, before stating that the said plot will be surveyed on town council cost.

Asked when the construction of the houses will start, MTC Corporate Affairs Manager John Ekongo said in a month or two, adding that they are just waiting for the euphoria around the athletes to simmer down.
