Kalkfeld: The Otjozondjupa Regional Council (ORC) has unveiled its ambitious plan to construct more than 90 new affordable houses at the Kalkfeld settlement. The initiative will begin with land servicing this year as part of efforts to rejuvenate the area.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Kalkfeld, located approximately 70 kilometers west of Otjiwarongo, was proclaimed a village council in 1991 but was downgraded in 1996 due to insufficient economic development. Cornelia Shikongo, the Senior Public Relations Officer of the ORC, expressed the council’s vision to restore Kalkfeld to its former village council status within the next three years by prioritizing the construction of affordable housing.
Shikongo revealed that the ORC has engaged the National Housing Enterprises (NHE) to build 93 new houses, aiming to stimulate economic activities and enable the settlement to reclaim its village council status. To support this goal, the ORC allocated N.dollars 5.3 million to the NHE in July for the land servicing project at the settlement, which is scheduled to start this year, with actual house construction planned for 2026.
Residents of Kalkfeld interested in home ownership are encouraged to register with the settlement office or visit the Otjozondjupa Regional Council. Shikongo also mentioned that this development initiative would be extended to other settlements in the region to facilitate their upgrade to village council status.
