Busan: South Korean conglomerate DL Group’s subsidiary, DL E and C, is collaborating with the Philippines’ largest private-sector electric distribution utility company, Meralco, to advance small modular reactor (SMR) projects in the Philippines. This initiative was announced by the Philippine Presidential Communications Office (PCO) on Sunday.
According to Namibia Press Agency, a feasibility study for a 320-megawatt SMR was launched in August, aiming to develop this project in the near term. SMRs are compact nuclear plants that can produce clean and stable energy, requiring less land and shorter construction periods compared to traditional facilities.
Philippine President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos engaged with top officials of DL Group in Busan, South Korea, during the 32nd APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting held on Saturday. The discussions focused on the company’s energy prospects and other potential ventures in the Philippines.
DL Group, which has been operational since 1939, has core business interests in construction, petrochemicals, and energy.
