Rebels, Power Petrol victorious at Barax Five tournament

Rebels netball team and Power Petrol football club emerged as victors of the annual Barax Five Football and Netball tournament held at the Etoshapoort Stadium in Outjo over the weekend.

The tournament, which started off in Kamanjab over three years ago, has now been shifted to Outjo and this year attracted seven netball and 24 football teams, some from as far as the Erongo and Otjozondjupa regions.

The netball fixtures were played on a round-robin basis, with the top four teams qualifying for the semi-finals, which was played in the same format. In the semi-finals, eventual winners Rebels defeated Thunderbirds by a 28-23 score line in their first match, while Vuvuzela thrashed Bingo with a 32-12 score line.

The final round saw Thunderbirds humbling Bingo by 37-13, while Rebels maintained their unbeaten run by defeating Vuvuzela with a 21-17 scoreline to see them being crowned victors. Vuvuzela finished in second place, while Thunderbirds and Bingo were third and fourth respectively.

Rebels pocketed N.dollars 7 000, 12 gold medals and a trophy for their victory, while Vuvuzela, as runner-up, received N.dollars 5 000 and 12 silver medals. Thunderbirds walked away with N.dollars 3 000 and 12 bronze medals as the third-placed team.

The tournament’s attention then shifted to Sunday’s football semi-final games, where Power Petrol FC defeated AC Milan by 4-3 on penalties after playing out to a 1-1 draw after regulation time.

Golden Bees and Opuwo-based Young Rangers also produced a dramatic penalty shoot-out that ended 8-7 in Golden Bees’ favour after the two teams played out to a stalemate in regulation time.

Power Petrol FC then showed their dominance in the final game by beating home-based Golden Bees with a 1-0 score to walk away with N.dollars 20 000, 20 gold medals and a trophy, while Golden Bees received N.dollars 12 000 and 20 silver medals. Young Rangers and AC Milan each pocketed N.dollars 4 000 as losing semi-finalists.
