The Swapo Party Women’s Council (SPWC) on Monday called on the government to deport a Chinese national who allegedly ordered an employee to take off her uniform in full view of customers at his shop in Windhoek’s Chinatown shopping complex.

SPWC Secretary Eunice Ipinge said the incident, which was reported on by the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation on Sunday, is “highly regrettable and disturbing” and was humiliating for the woman.

“The Swapo Party Women’s Council and Swapo Party Youth League strongly condemn the action and demand that the shop be closed, that damages be paid to the woman and that the culprit be deported from Namibia and declared persona non grata in Namibia,” Ipinge said.

The council and youth league also called on all employers and investors to respect the Namibian Constitution and adhere to Namibian laws.

Comment could not be obtained from the employer, only known as ‘Mr Li’, as he was not present at the shop and the employees did not have his contact details.

Meanwhile, Affirmative Repositioning member Elifas Nghitomoka told the media they plan to visit all shops in Chinatown to check if employees have employment contracts and if they find that there are people working without contracts, they will insist that contracts be issued to them immediately.
