Western Suburbs Rugby Club bounced back from their defeat on the opening day of the season to post an emphatic victory over Trustco United at Suburbs Park here on Saturday afternoon.

Having lost 37-25 to the University of Namibia (UNAM) last week, scored five tries to two in a dominant performance on their way to a bonus-point victory of 38-15.

United squandered an opportunity to take the lead when fly-half Chris Arries missed a penalty in the 13th minute.

His side was made to rue that miss as Suburbs scored the first points of the game via three try-scorer AJ Kearns which was converted by Bronwyn Willemse for a 7-0 lead.

Kearns was back to haunt United when he finished off a beautiful passing move which started five metres from Suburbs’ try line and finished off with a conversion by Willemse to make it 14-0.

In the 29th minute, the match official brandished a red card to Chemigan Beukes of Suburbs and United captain Gerhard Thirion for fighting, to leave both sides 14 apiece.

Two minutes later Suburbs were awarded a penalty which was converted by Willemse to make it 17-0 before Arries reduced the arrears via a converted penalty for a 17-3 scoreline.

Gino Wilson then concluded the first half proceedings via a converted try by Willemse to leave the halftime score at 24-3.

Suburbs scored the first try of the second half through Dale Cloete which was converted by substitute Justin Nel before United’s Doctor Andreas crossed the whitewash for Arries to convert and make it 31-10.

However, Kearns completed his hat-trick when he ran 80 metres to increase his side’s lead to 38-10 before Andreas scored his second try in the last two minutes of the match to make it a 38-10 final score.

Suburbs coach Lorenzo Kloppers said his side had fulfilled the targets they had set themselves for the match.

“I am very happy with the tries we scored, the game plan is to play quickly from the base because our wings are very fast. We corrected all our problems from last week,” he said.

His opposite number Robbie Dickson said his team is in a rebuilding phase and the young squad is learning every day.

“I am not stressed by these defeats. It is still early in the season. We will bounce back and go all the way,” he said.
