A man allegedly escaped from lawful custody at Oshakati Magistrate’s Court on Friday, where he was due to appear for charges of theft.

According to the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) crime report on Monday, the incident happened at around 09h30.

“The suspect managed to escape through an unlocked police holding cell before he jumped over the court wall and disappeared,” the police said.

The suspect was in custody for a crime he allegedly committed in Ongwediva in October 2021 and court proceedings could therefore not go ahead. He has not been re-arrested.

In a separate incident, a 27-year-old man was arrested at Oshakati’s Uupindi location for contravening the Products and Energy Act 13 of 1990, after he was allegedly found in possession of 34 containers of 25 litres each and one 20-litre container filled with fuel valued at more than N.dollars 14 000.

The suspect was also found with 23 empty 25-litre containers and one empty drum of 200 litres as well as a cash amount of N.dollars 15 769.10 at his place of residence, the report read. Another suspect ran away and is still at large.

The police further arrested a 33-year-old man at Ondangwa on Friday in a similar crime, when he was allegedly found in possession of two 25-litre containers filled with petrol fuel, with an estimated value of N.dollars 564.90.

Upon police search, the suspect was further found with N.dollars 3 610.85, empty 25-litre containers and a pick-up truck believed to be used in transporting the fuel, which was also seized by the police.

Investigations in all matters continue.
