Truck burns to ashes on Rundu/Nkurenkuru road

A truck from Zambia, carrying bags of beans en-route to Oshikango burnt to ashes on the Rundu/Nkurenkuru road on Friday.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) Kavango West Region Commander, Commissioner Josephat Abel told Nampa on Monday that the truck was carrying 250 bags of beans, to the border town when the driver noticed the fire in the gearbox area of the truck.

“The 26-year-old driver of the truck escaped the fire without injury and efforts to extinguish the fire proved futile as it quickly spread to the entire truck within minutes,” he said.

The truck was expected to proceed to Walvis Bay to pick up a load of salt before returning to Zambia.

Meanwhile, in an unrelated matter, the police at Rundu are investigating a case of armed robbery after the Yetu supermarket at Ndama informal settlement in Rundu was robbed of cash, on Friday.

A weekend crime report on Sunday said the incident happened when unknown suspects allegedly entered the supermarket, pointed a gun at the cashier before fleeing the scene with a bag containing N.dollars 16 170.

No arrests have been made.

The report further said the police in the Kavango West Region are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving and damage to state property after a 26-year-old man driving a Toyota Quantum, carrying 12 passengers bumped into the gate of the police station at Mururani when he lost control of the vehicle.

It is alleged that the driver, in the process also damaged the fence and pavement before the vehicle hit a tree and stopped.

“Some passengers sustained serious to minor injuries and those with serious injuries were transported to the Rundu State Hospital where they are receiving treatment,” it said.
