The Walvis Bay Urban, Swakopmund and Karibib Constituencies all emerged victorious in soccer, netball and volleyball respectively during the Erongo Governor’s cup which took place at Swakopmund over Easter weekend.

The Walvis Bay Urban team won against Omaruru with five goals to two during a heated finals match on Monday, while Swakopmund went against Omaruru netball team, where they managed to win 52 goals to 29.

The Karibib constituency scooped the trophy in a first-time Volleyball match against Arandis which ended in a 2:1 point victory for Karibib.

In an interview with Nampa, Walvis Bay Urban football team coach Knowledge Ipinge credited his team 100 per cent for the win noting that the match was a tactical one which they approached differently with the guidance of previous matches.

“The players prepared mentally so they were not complacent in the final match, as well as to be aware and focused at all times, which ended up paying off,” Iipinge noted.

Meanwhile, Swakopmund netball team manager Michelle Brooks expressed excitement for the team’s win, emphasising that it is the first time the constituency is winning the trophy and that they have definitely worked hard for it.

Omaruru coach for netball Zenobia Van Rooyen commended the organisation of the entire event noting how well everything went despite the fact that her team was the runner-up.

“Today’s match was tough, but we are grateful that we managed to get the second position. We congratulate Swakopmund, however, we are going to put in more work from here onwards and next year, we will be ready to challenge them again,” Van Rooyen said.

Omaruru constituency was also awarded as the overall winner of the tournament.

Vice President of Netball Namibia Rebecca Goagoses in an interview with the media after the event, commended the governor’s cup, emphasising the importance of early sports development.

“I believe that such events should take place in all regions and we are always preaching that netball should also always be part of such national events as it is a national sports code,” she said.
