It is high time to tender an apology to the Namibian people: Steinmeier

WINDHOEK: Germany’s President Frank-Walter Steinmeier says it is high time that Germany apologises to Namibia for the genocide it inflicted on the Nama and Ovaherero people between 1904 and 1908.

He was speaking at the memorial service of the late President Hage Geingob here on Saturday. Geingob died on 04 February and is set to be buried on Sunday.

Steinmeier said he spoke to Geingob late last year and the Namibian leader’s wish was for Namibia and Germany to successfully conclude the joint declaration ‘in order to bring the special relationship between the two countries to a new level.’

He stressed that Germany remains committed to the path of reconciliation.

‘Reconciliation is not about closing the past, it is about taking responsibility for our past – and it is a commitment to a better future together. I hope I will be able to return to this country very soon and under different circumstances, because I am convinced that it is high time to tender an apology to the Namibian people. My only regret is th
at our friend, the great President Geingob, will not be there to finish the process he started,’ Steinmeier said.

The declaration acknowledges Germany’s responsibility for the 1904-1908 genocide and commits to reparations and development support for affected communities.

The affected communities and Government are however not in agreement with the Euro 1.1 billion offered by Germany as a final settlement, compared to the damage inflicted on the communities.

Mbumba urges Namibians to honour Geingob by executing their mandates

WINDHOEK: Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba has said one of the best ways Namibians can honour the late President Hage Geingob is for them to continue executing their mandates on the basis of accountability, transparency, honesty and commitment.

Mbumba, who made these remarks at the late president’s official memorial service in Windhoek on Saturday, added that Namibians should understand that, as the late president used to say, ‘Without effective governance and without crucial governance fundamentals, development cannot take place.’

‘Like a fallen Baobab tree, your branches, your leaves and your seeds will ensure that your legacy lives on. Your great name, Hage G Geingob, will not die, it will remain forever etched in our hearts,’ said Mbumba.

He emphasised that Namibians should ensure that the policies of the late president will be pursued until they achieve their intended purpose – that of achieving shared prosperity for all Namibians as part of the second struggle for economic emancipation.

Mbumba said
the words of the late president that said ‘inclusivity spells harmony and exclusivity spells conflict’ has left Namibians with the foundations for continued peace and unity.

‘You have left us with processes, systems and institutions for an effective governance architecture which we will take care of. You have left us with an economic roadmap towards prosperity. We will take care of one another and most importantly, we will take care of your enduring legacy, the Namibian House of shared prosperity, where no one feels left out,’ he said.

Mbumba said Geingob was a living testament of international and Pan African solidarity and undoubtedly, given his many talents and gifts, he will go down in history as a peacemaker and diplomat.

He added that from the moment the late president walked through the halls of State House, he had to deal with a myriad of economic challenges, unprecedented droughts and the devastating impacts of COVID-19.

Mbumba was however quick to say that Geingob, like the indomitable lion he w
as, withstood all challenges and remained steadfast and resolute in his quest to promote economic recovery and growth, employment creation and the provision of basics such as housing.

‘From the beginning of your presidency, to the very end, you the patriotic first citizen, the staunch Pan-Africanist, the peacemaker and unifier led with your heart, your intellect and your conscience. You led with courage and conviction and left us a template for success,’ he said.

Mbumba said Geingob was not only ‘a most distinguished luminary, a peerless personality and a colossus of contemporary leadership, but he was also a man who lived a life of destiny and purpose.’

Zambia to rename roads after Geingob and Nujoma

OSHAKATI: President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema said that a decision was taken to rename two of the roads after the late President Hage Geingob and Founding President Sam Nujoma.

Hichilema revealed this during Geingob’s memorial service held on Saturday in Windhoek.

‘We as the people of Zambia have taken a decision to rename one of our critical roads after President Geingob,’ he said, adding that another road will also be renamed after Nujoma.

According to Hichilema, this is being done to keep the legacy of those who were pillars of peace and stability for Africa.

‘Geingob was more of a Zambian than a Namibian because he spent about 17 years in the country,’ said Hichilema.

The neighbouring country’s president also highlighted President Geingob’s remarkable contribution to the University of Zambia’s academic body of work.

Hichilema was an undergraduate student when Geingob was a scholar at the university at the time.

He hailed Geingob as a true Statesman, a leader who was courageous and willing to st
and-up and speak for the benefit of the African countries.

China hopes Namibia continues Geingob’s mission

WINDHOEK: Jiang Zuojun, Vice Chairperson of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, said his country firmly believes that the people of Namibia will carry on the mission of late President Hage Geingob, making strides in national development and revitalisation.

Zuojun, who was speaking at the memorial service of the late president, said for nearly 10 years under the leadership of Geingob, Namibia enjoyed a stable society, sound economic development, and constant improvement of people’s livelihood, delivering achievements for all to see in all sectors.

‘President Geingob was committed to promoting the cause of international and regional peace and development and is deeply respected by Africa and the international community. Under his leadership, Namibia held high the banner of Pan Africanism, actively promoted solidarity and integration of Africa, and maintained its firm position in safeguarding international justice and fairness,’ he said.

He added that, ‘With great devotion, president Geing
ob made vital contributions in promoting China-Namibia and China-Africa friendship. At this difficult moment, the people of China stand firmly with the people of Namibia.’

Zuojun pledged China’s readiness to work with Namibia and continue to deepen the friendship between the two countries and cooperate in all fields, promoting greater development for bilateral ties.

‘President Geingob is a good friend of the Chinese people. In his lifetime, he attached great importance to developing relations with China and made several visits to China, promoting in-depth development of the comprehensive strategic and cooperative partnership between China and Namibia,’ he said.
