The court case against activists Michael Amushelelo, Dimbulukeni Nauyoma, and Inna Hengari in which they were arrested for an illegal protest on 21 March has been postponed to 27 April 2023 for further police investigation.

The activists, who appeared in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, are charged with contravening the Public Gatherings Proclamation, malicious damage to property, inciting public violence, and contempt of court. This was the second appearance for Amushelelo and Nauyoma while Hengari appeared for the third time since their arrest on 21 March over an illegal protest they led.

The protest that took place at the Katutura Youth Centre on Independence Day was against unemployment in Namibia.

The court heard that the postponement is due to three outstanding witness statements preventing the completion of the investigation.

Amushelelo and Nauyoma will again appear in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to submit a formal bail application.

Hengari was already granted bail on 24 March.
