Agriculture Ministry to construct meat processing plant at Katima

The Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Land Reform plans to construct a meat processing plant at Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region.

This was said by the executive director in the ministry, Ndiyakupi Nghituwamata, during a site inspection of five hectares of land at the Katima Mulilo abattoir, on Wednesday.

She said the construction of the meat processing plant is among the major activities funded by the European Union (EU) through the Eleventh European Development Fund (EDF11).

“Apart from the construction of the Katima Mulisa meat processing plant, the funding also includes the construction of the Katima Mulilo quarantine facility and upgrading of the Sachinga Livestock Development Centre. The livestock development centre will be equipped with a satellite artificial insemination facility,” she stated.

The project is worth a total of N.dollars 35 million.

The executive director further said with the new processing plant, Namibia will be able to add value to the meat and simultaneously create jobs in the region.

Nghituwamata said the livestock support programme is implemented in the eight northern communal areas of Kunene, Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto, Ohangwena, Kavango West, Kavango East and Zambezi.

The overall objective of this programme is to promote entrepreneurship and enhance the livelihood of northern communal areas livestock farming communities.

This programme is funded through a programme estimated by the EU at an amount of N.dollars 284 million.
