Beijing: The first case tackled by an artificial intelligence (AI) pediatrician at Beijing Children's Hospital involved an eight-year-old boy suffering from persistent tics for three weeks. A skull base mass discovered earlier added complexity to his condition, with diagnostic results from various hospitals proving inconsistent.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Ni Xin, head of the hospital, along with 13 renowned experts from different departments, conducted an in-depth discussion regarding the boy's condition. They concluded that further MRI evaluation was necessary and recommended expediting the required examinations. Simultaneously, the AI pediatrician analyzed the case, offering recommendations that closely aligned with those of the expert panel.

This AI pediatrician, the first of its kind in China, has been instrumental in multidisciplinary consultations for complex cases. It pioneers a dual-doctor parallel model that combines AI with multidisciplinary human expertise, transforming the diagnosis and treatment of challenging pediatric conditions.

Ni explained that the AI pediatrician was developed by the hospital in collaboration with multiple technology companies. It leverages the hospital's pediatric medical big model, its health medical innovation applications key laboratory, and its validation platform for innovative pediatric medical devices.

This AI system integrates the clinical expertise of over 300 renowned pediatric specialists and decades of high-quality medical records. Through structured clinical reasoning paradigm training, it has developed a comprehensive knowledge system covering both common and complex pediatric diseases.

Since its launch on January 18, the AI pediatrician underwent nearly a month of internal testing, earning recognition from experts before officially entering clinical application on February 13.

Wang Xiaochuan, founder and CEO of Baichuan AI, a technical collaboration partner, emphasized that the AI pediatrician's application represents a significant milestone in AI healthcare. This advancement is expected to enhance the accessibility and quality of medical services.

Ni added that the hospital will continue to advance the pediatric health big model, aiming to cover diverse scenarios including primary medical institutions and family health management. Through technological empowerment, the hope is to provide high-quality medical services to all 300 million children across the country.
