Late liberation struggle stalwart Hilde Amunyela-Shimwetheleni has been accorded a State funeral.

This was confirmed in a media release issued by the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology on Tuesday.

Amunyela-Shimwetheleni died on 25 January 2023 at the age of 89. She was also known as ‘Kapitaholo’, which means bulletproof, a name which she earned as People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) informant on the ground during the liberation struggle.

The late Amunyela-Shimwetheleni was described as a formidable fighter and a woman who was not afraid of losing her life or the lives of her five children during the liberation struggle.

“Under tough situations, she continued to provide accurate reconnaissance with limited resources. Her bravery played a very important role in the fight for a free and independent Namibia,” the statement said.

Amunyela-Shimwetheleni was introduced to politics by her late brother Sackaria Daniel at the age of 32 and became a political activist along with Swapo veteran and politician Nathaniel Maxuilili.

“With her comrades, she grew into a formidable pioneer propagating for the independence of Namibia,” the statement said.

The memorial service for Amunyela-Shimwetheleni will be held on Friday at Onyelelo village in the Omusati Region’s Etayi Constituency. The burial will take place on Saturday at the Omugulugwombashe Memorial Site, in the Tsandi Constituency of Omusati.
