Busy schedule awaits bowlers

After successfully hosting its Champion of Champions tournament that saw the cream of the crop in Namibian bowling locking horns, the Namibia Bowling Association (NBA) will this weekend host the senior pair competition.

The competition will be hosted by the TransNamib Bowling Club at its venue in Windhoek on Saturday.

In an interview with Nampa on Thursday, NBA secretary Anjuleen Viljoen said the champion of champions tournament which was held last week Saturday was a huge success.

“The competition was very competitive having the cream of the crop in the men and women categories from different clubs fighting it out. This yielded some excellent bowls, particularly from the winners,” she said.

Viljoen added that for the coming weeks the Namibian bowlers’ schedule will be cramped with competitions which is a good thing for the sport.

“This weekend will see the TransNamib pairs competition, thereafter, there will be the Windhoek League Pairs for two weeks to be held at all the Windhoek clubs and then on 13 and 14 November 2021 we will host the National Closed singles competition,” said Viljoen who added that the man and lady winners of the singles will qualify for the World Champion of Champions in Australia.

She also told this agency that with the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games approaching, the NBA has submitted a long list of players that are eligible to represent the country.

“Unfortunately at this stage, we only got two spots for qualifying as we are regarded as an individual sport and not a team sport. This means that we can send one man or one lady to compete in the singles discipline. Or alternatively, send a pairs team of two men or two ladies to compete in the pairs discipline. However, this is very bad for our overall standings as bowls consist of four disciplines namely singles, pairs, trips and fours. Five men and five lady players are needed to fulfil this and to compete respectfully,” Viljoen said.
