Abuja: Prof. Qrisstuberg Amua, the Executive Director of the Centre for Food Safety and Agricultural Research (CEFSAR), has issued a warning to Nigerians regarding the consumption of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) in food. During a news conference in Abuja, Amua highlighted the potential health risks associated with GMO-induced foods and grains.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, GMOs refer to plants, animals, or microbes whose DNA has been altered through genetic engineering to achieve specific outcomes such as improved shelf life, increased yield, or pest resistance. Amua raised concerns about the potential health risks, including the possibility of causing colon cancer, due to the indigestibility of many GMO-induced foods. He emphasized the need for rejecting GMOs, citing further risks such as altered natural human features, impotency, and infertility.

Amua called for a strong political stance against the proliferation of GMOs in Nigeria, commending certain African countries for their rejection of such organisms. He refuted claims that GMOs could ensure food security, describing them as disastrous and genocidal. Dr. Segun Adebayo, the Deputy Director of CEFSAR, also addressed the media, urging them to critically examine the purported benefits of GMOs and to conduct independent research against imported ideas that could lead to self-destruction.

Adebayo expressed concerns over the lack of regenerative capabilities in GMOs, which he described as opposing the natural law of regeneration. He also warned against the potential complicity of government officials who might promote GMOs for various reasons.
