Chief Stephanus dies

Chief Joel Stephanus of the Vaalgras Traditional Authority succumbed to COVID-19 complications on Wednesday.

He was 77.

Confirming the death to Nampa, Vaalgras senior traditional councillor Martin Biwa said Stephanus died in hospital at Keetmanshoop around 09h00 on Wednesday.

He described the late Stephanus as a hero to the people of Vaalgras, who fought for the liberation of Namibia and continued to fight for the betterment of his people until the end.

“He was a soft-spoken person. We will remember him as a legend, he leaves behind a rich legacy, he was full of love, filled with humanity and he was a man of his word,” said Biwa.

Meanwhile ||Kharas governor, Aletha Frederick, in an interview with Nampa on Wednesday described the late chief as a good listener and someone who was committed to his community and the Swapo Party.

“He was someone who took his community issues to heart, he cared for others and was a selfless person. His death is a great loss to the nation, the community of Vaalgras and the region. My deepest condolences to the family,” she said.

Stephanus was the chief of the Vaalgras Traditional Authority since 1975. He leaves behind his wife and six children.
