Windhoek:Young Myanmar maritime students are actively engaging with Chinese enterprises and scholars to advance their country's maritime growth, focusing on smarter and greener port development.

According to Namibia Press Agency, May Thu Khaing, a harbor engineering student at Myanmar Maritime University, has gained valuable insights from China's expertise in port development. Her participation in an event organized by CITIC Myanmar and China Harbour Engineering Company Ltd. highlighted Myanmar's potential to enhance its port capacity.

The event, held ahead of World Maritime Day, gathered government officials, Chinese port development representatives, and scholars to discuss operational excellence in maritime affairs. This aligns with the International Maritime Organization's theme for the year.

May Thu Khaing expressed optimism about future cooperation on deep-sea port projects in Myanmar, which are expected to complement the nation's riverine shipping network, increase cargo handling capacity, and boost international trade while benefiting local communities.

U Nay Myo Nyunt, chief engineer of the Myanmar Port Authority, emphasized the shared vision between China and Myanmar to build a more efficient and sustainable maritime ecosystem. He highlighted the importance of international expertise and technological insights from Chinese companies in upgrading Myanmar's port operations.

In line with the International Maritime Organization, technical training is seen as a crucial element in implementing maritime policies effectively. China has contributed by providing training courses on port and waterway construction technologies, as well as sharing development experiences, according to Jiang Yunpeng from the Tianjin Research Institute for Water Transport Engineering.

Zhang Yue, head of public affairs at CITIC Myanmar, noted the commitment to deepen cooperation between government, enterprises, and universities in both countries. This collaboration aims to offer opportunities for Myanmar students and support the growth of Myanmar's maritime industry.
