Henties Bay:Windhoek CMMZE Energy Namibia (Pty) Ltd has revealed plans for a N$17 billion green hydrogen and ammonia project in Henties Bay. The facility is set to produce 210,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually for export to Europe.
According to NAMPA, the project has achieved "ready-to-build" status after securing its Final Investment Decision (FID) in late September 2026. The completion of the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) and acquisition of necessary permits facilitated this milestone.
Construction is scheduled to commence in the first quarter of 2027, with the facility expected to start commercial operations and supply activities by the first quarter of 2030. The plant will produce 35,000 tonnes of green hydrogen per year, converting it into 210,000 tonnes of ammonia.
The facility will be independent of the main power grid, utilizing its renewable energy plant to generate 800 megawatts (MW) of electricity. It will include a large-scale electrolyser and an on-site Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Ammonia will be produced using the Haber-Bosch process and stored at -33°C under cryogenic conditions for export. The Henties Bay site will serve as the loading point for CMM vessels delivering ammonia to the European Union.
CMMZE Energy Namibia is headquartered in Windhoek and is developing this project as its initial foray into green hydrogen and ammonia. It is primarily owned by CMMZE Invest, a shipowner with extensive experience in the maritime industry since 1979, led by directors Dr. Harry Gonteb and Trevor Brockerhoff. This venture is part of Namibia's broader green hydrogen initiatives, which include a proposed N$50 billion plant in Arandis.
