Windhoek: Namibian long jumper Chenoult Lionel Coetzee secured his place in the men's long jump final at the Commonwealth Games after producing a leap of 7.66 metres (m) during Monday morning's qualifying round. The African Championships silver medallist, who holds the Namibian record of 8.27m set in April 2023, competed in Group B, which was won by Jamaica's Tajay Gayle with a jump of 8.10m.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Coetzee finished sixth in his group, earning one of the 12 places in Wednesday's final, which is scheduled to begin at 19h24. His qualification came despite a challenging start, with his opening attempt ruled a foul. He responded with a second jump of 7.62m, moving into fifth place in the group, before improving to 7.66m with his final attempt to secure his place in the final.

Only three athletes from the 20 competitors across the two qualifying groups surpassed the automatic qualifying mark of 8.00m. They were Gayle (8.10m), Uroy Ryan of St Vincent and the Grenadines (8.04m), and India's Murali Sreeshankar, who topped Group A with a leap of 8.01m.

Meanwhile, fellow Namibian Charley Matundu was also in action on Monday, finishing third in the fourth heat of the men's 100m. The 23-year-old sprinter crossed the line in 10.50 seconds, behind Jamaica's Rohan Watson, who won the heat in 10.13 seconds, and Gurindervir Singh of India who was second with a time of 10.39 seconds. The fastest time of the opening round came from Ghana's Benjamin Azamati, who clocked 10.00 seconds in the fifth heat.
