Colombian Rebel Group Comuneros del Sur Surrenders 1 Tonne of Weapons

Bogota: Colombian armed rebel group Comuneros del Sur, which was previously part of the National Liberation Army (ELN), has signed two peace deals with the Colombian government and surrendered 1 tonne of weapons, Infobae news portal reported.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Colombian President Gustavo Petro, who signed the agreements, reportedly confirmed that the group had surrendered 1 tonne of weapons and declared an end to Comuneros del Sur's violence.

Colombia has been in a state of armed conflict involving various paramilitary organizations for more than half a century. During this time, more than 260,000 people have died and millions have been displaced. Petro's administration came to power in 2022 with a promise to achieve a comprehensive peace with the country's numerous rebel groups.
