Windhoek: Namibia Football Association (NFA) president Robert Shimooshili says Namibia's representation in regional football structures will not only strengthen football administration, but will promote national unity, peace, and economic growth. Shimooshili secured a significant milestone on Sunday after being elected to the Executive Committee (Exco) of the Council of Southern African Football Associations (Cosafa).According to Namibia Press Agency, the NFA president, in an interview with Nampa on Monday, said the achievement belongs to the nation as a whole, and not solely to the football association. 'Football continues to play a major role in bringing communities together and fostering harmony among people from different backgrounds,' he said.Shimooshili said national unity creates an environment in which citizens and institutions can focus on economic growth and development across various sectors, including the football industry. He added that Namibia now has an opportunity to advance its interests within the regional football body by creating pathways for development, capacity building, and greater inclusion for Namibians.'There is a great opportunity for our country in terms of capacity building, development, and growth for our people to be included, as well as hosting football events, which will contribute to economic upliftment, poverty reduction, and hunger alleviation,' he said. The NFA president noted that hosting regional and international football events could increase exposure for Namibian athletes while stimulating local economic activity through tourism, infrastructure development, and business opportunities.Shimooshili further described the support he received as a sign that Namibians still have confidence in his leadership and his ability to represent the country at the regional level. 'It means the Namibian people have trust and faith in me to represent the country on their behalf, and I will strive to deliver to the best of my ability,' he said.According to Shimooshili, the recogni tion from the regional football community also demonstrates Namibia's continued relevance in the development of football in southern Africa, stressing the importance of developing the next generation of football leaders and professionals to ensure the country continues progressing in the sport. 'We need to groom more young Namibians to take over and elevate the game to the next level. Investing in youth development and football structures will not only strengthen the sport but also contribute to national development and create opportunities for young Namibians in the future,' he said.
