COVID-19: Namibia records 1 193 new cases, 70 deaths

Health and Social Services Minister Dr. Kalumbi Shangula announced that Namibia on Wednesday recorded 1 193 new COVID-19 cases and 70 deaths.

Shangula in a COVID-19 update statement here Thursday said 36 of the deaths occurred in June 2021, saying that the announcement was occasioned by late audit and verification.

The deaths were recorded in 12 districts, taking the country’s death toll to 1812.

According to the minister, the Khomas region recorded the highest number of cases, at 254, followed by Erongo with 230, Oshana 228, Otjozondjupa 105, Omusati 101, Oshikoto 72, //Kharas 65, Kavango West 44, Ohangwena 32, Zambezi 25, Kavango East 19, Hardap 13, Omaheke three and Kunene two.

The newly confirmed cases were identified from 2 856 results received from laboratories in the last 24 hours and have a gender distribution of 689 females and 504 males ranging between the ages of three days and 88 years.

Among the confirmed cases are 125 learners of which 32 are from the Canisianum High School and the rest are from different schools, with 12 teachers, seven students and seven health care workers who have also tested positive for COVID-19, he said.

“Of all the confirmed cases, 14 reported having received the COVID-19 vaccine. Three of these are fully vaccinated,” Shangula said.

Meanwhile, the country recorded 578 new recoveries, bringing the total number of recoveries to 75 850.

Active cases in Namibia on Wednesday stood at 23 328, with 554 people hospitalized and 105 in intensive care units.

Moreover, a total number of 127 220 people have received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine by Wednesday, while 27 539 had received their second dose.
