COVID-19: Namibia records 1 286 new cases, 52 deaths

Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula on Wednesday said Namibia on Tuesday recorded 1 286 new COVID-19 cases and 52 deaths, bringing the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the country to 1 742.

He said the Windhoek district recorded the highest number of deaths with 29, while the others were reported from Swakopmund, Rundu, Okahandja, Walvis Bay, Rehoboth, Katima Mulilo and Grootfontein.

The minister said the newly confirmed cases were identified from 3 546 results received from laboratories in the preceding 24 hours, representing a 36 per cent positivity ratio.

They have a gender distribution of 699 female and 587 male patients with the youngest being one month old and the oldest, 104 years.

Khomas recorded the highest number of positive cases with 209 cases followed by Erongo at 202, Oshikoto 138, Ohangwena 130, ||Kharas 120, Otjozondjupa 117, Zambezi 110, Omusati 96, Kunene 68, Oshana 38, Omaheke 30, Kavango East 20, Hardap four and Kavango West also four.

Shangula said the cases include 235 learners, 39 teachers and one student. Thirty healthcare workers and 11 inmates also tested positive for COVID-19.

“Of all the confirmed cases, 14 reported to have received only one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine,” said Shangula.

Namibia currently has 75 272 active cases, of which 559 are hospitalised with 106 being in intensive care.

Furthermore, 3 754 new recoveries were also announced, bringing the total number of recoveries to 75 272.

A total number of 125 970 people had received their first COVID-19 vaccine dose by Tuesday and 26 937 had received their second dose.
