COVID-19: Namibia records 1 661 new cases and 30 deaths

Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia on Thursday recorded 1 661 new COVID-19 cases and 30 deaths in eight districts.

Windhoek recorded the highest number of deaths at nine, while the other districts were deaths were recorded included Swakopmund, Okahandja, Tsumeb, Rundu, Opuwo, Onandjokwe and Walvis Bay.

The total number of deaths in Namibia on Thursday stood at 1 586.

Shangula further said the newly confirmed cases represented a 46 per cent positivity ratio and had a gender distribution of 890 females and 771 males, with the youngest being 26 days old and the oldest, 100 years.

The Khomas Region recorded 566 cases followed by Hardap with 206 cases; Erongo with 185; Otjozondjupa 145; Kavango East 138; Oshana 99; Oshikoto 96; Zambezi 65; //Kharas 64; Kunene 51; Omusati 41; Ohangwena three and Omaheke with two cases.

“Of all the confirmed cases 16, which represent one per cent, received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while only one person has been fully vaccinated,” said Shangula.

Among the confirmed cases were 193 learners and 38 teachers, as well as 17 students and 38 health care workers.

Namibia on Thursday had 22 562 active cases, of which 88 were in intensive care units.

In addition, 930 new recoveries were also announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 68 710.

A cumulative 122 381 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccines by Thursday, while 25 422 had received their second dose.
