COVID-19: Namibia records 161 cases, two deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, announced that Namibia on Friday recorded 161 COVID-19 cases and two deaths, bringing total deaths in the country to 3 993.

In the daily update issued on Saturday, Shangula said the cases form part of 1 959 results and represented 8.8 per cent positivity ratio, with a sex distribution of 61 females and 100 males aged between 10 and 83 years.

The Kavango East Region recorded the highest number of cases at 100, followed by the Omaheke Region with 16 cases, Otjozondjupa with nine Zambezi eight, Khomas five, Erongo four, Oshana four while Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshikoto and Kunene recorded three cases each. Hardap recording two cases, while ||Kharas recorded one.

Among the confirmed cases are 31 learners, 24 healthcare workers, eight teachers and six students. Nine cases received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 31 cases are fully vaccinated, while 132 cases are not vaccinated, accounting for 76.7 per cent of the total confirmed cases.

Shangula further reported that 67 new recoveries were recorded, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 151 992.

The number of active cases on Friday stood at 2 816, of which 60 were hospitalised and three admitted to intensive care units (ICU). One of the hospitalised cases had received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while five are fully vaccinated. One of the cases in ICU is fully vaccinated.

The minister also reported that by 10 February 2022, a total 425 210 people had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, of which 118 860 had received the single dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. A total 7 363 are children aged between 12 and 17 years.

A total of 246 809 people have received two doses. Thus, 365 669 people had completed their vaccination, which translates to 24.8 per cent of the target population. Meanwhile, 20 579 people had received booster doses.
