COVID-19: Namibia records 181 new cases, eight deaths

Health and Social Services Minister, Dr Kalumbi Shangula has announced that Namibia recorded 181 new COVID-19 cases on Friday.

Giving the COVID-19 update on Saturday, Shangula said Namibia also recorded eight new COVID-19 deaths in the Onandjokwe, Windhoek, Rundu, Tsandi, Gobabis and Usakos districts.

By Friday, the number of confirmed cases in the country stood at 125 494, while 3 407 people have succumbed to the virus.

The Omusati Region recorded the highest number of positive cases at 50, followed by Kunene and Otjozondjupa with 30 cases each, Ohangwena 28, Erongo 11, Khomas eight, Omaheke and ||Kharas recorded six cases each, Oshana and Kavango West each recorded four cases, Oshikoto three while Kavango East recorded one case.

The health minister noted that the new confirmed cases include 96 learners, seven students, four teachers and seven healthcare workers.

Of the confirmed cases, three had been fully vaccinated while another was reported to have received one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Active cases on Friday stood at 2 280, of which 169 were hospitalised, with 22 in intensive care units.

Furthermore, 50 new recoveries were announced, bringing the total number of recoveries in the country to 119 796.

As of Friday, 218 600 persons had received their first dose of the AstraZeneca or Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccines and 123 235 had received their second doses.
