Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, on Wednesday announced that Namibia recorded 452 new Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 56 264.

The cases had a gender distribution of 198 males and 254 females between the ages of one month and 98 years.

Shangula in the daily COVID-19 update said the country also recorded 11 deaths from the districts of Windhoek, Okahandja, Oshakati, Nankudu and Otjiwarongo, bringing the total number of deaths to 865. All deceased persons aged between 37 and 82 years reportedly had comorbidities.

Of the cases announced on Wednesday, Khomas recorded the highest number at 273, followed by Hardap with 36 and Oshana with 34 cases. Erongo recorded 32 cases while //Kharas and Omaheke recorded 20 cases each. Otjozondjupa recorded 15 cases, Oshikoto 12 and Zambezi four. The Ohangwena and Omusati regions each recorded three cases.

Among the cases recorded on Wednesday are 27 learners, 10 teachers from different schools, 11 students and 26 health care workers.

Meanwhile, Shangula said the number of deaths recorded are unacceptably high for Namibia’s small population.

“All death cases have not been vaccinated. The misinformation campaign against vaccination is costing Namibia many lives. You can take your first dose anywhere in the country and the second dose at a different vaccination site and not necessarily where you received your first dose,” he said.

A total of 100 new recoveries were also recorded, bringing the total recoveries to 51 048.

Active cases on Wednesday stood at 4 340 with 286 hospitalised cases, of which 53 were in intensive care units.

Cumulatively, 70 585 COVID-19 vaccine first doses and 10 000 COVID-19 vaccine second doses were administered by Wednesday.
