Windhoek: Deep Yellow has awarded civil and concrete construction contracts worth N$392.6 million to two 100% Namibian-owned companies for the Tumas Uranium Project, a move expected to create about 500 jobs and boost local enterprise development.According to Namibia Press Agency, the contracts were awarded to Namibia Construction Pty Ltd and Nexus Building and Civils Contractors Pty Ltd through a competitive tender process. This development comes as the company advances towards its anticipated Final Investment Decision later this year, with mobilisation for the projects expected to begin in August 2026.Deep Yellow Namibia Managing Director Zebra Kasete expressed confidence in the capability of Namibian companies to deliver projects of international significance. "Today's announcement is a celebration of Namibian capability. It demonstrates that local companies have the expertise and capacity to deliver projects of international significance," he said.Kasete emphasized the company's commitment from the o utset to maximise opportunities for Namibian businesses, develop local capability, and create long-term value through the Tumas Project. He highlighted the leading role that local businesses and employees would play in developing one of Namibia's next major mining operations.The contracts encompass critical civil and concrete infrastructure at the Tumas processing facilities and are expected to enhance construction flexibility while reducing project execution risks. Kasete also noted that the investment would create opportunities for local suppliers, transport providers, accommodation establishments, and other Namibian businesses. This initiative is anticipated to contribute to skills development, foreign direct investment, and future tax and royalty revenues once the mine becomes operational.He mentioned that additional procurement opportunities are expected as the project progresses, providing further prospects for Namibian contractors, skilled tradespeople, graduates, apprentices, and service providers . "There is still important work ahead as we move towards the Final Investment Decision, but this milestone demonstrates the steady progress we are making. Together with our Namibian partners, we are building more than a mine; we are creating opportunities that will benefit Namibia for generations to come," Kasete said.Kasete further stated that the Tumas Uranium Project is well-positioned to contribute to global energy security while strengthening Namibia's position as a leading uranium-producing nation and supporting sustainable economic development.
