Economic Watch: Swiss Importers Embrace Chinese EVs for Adaptable, Affordable Options.

Zurich: Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining popularity among Swiss importers and consumers with their adaptable and affordable products. At Switzerland’s largest motor show, Auto Zurich 2024, which concluded Sunday, 70 brands showcased their latest models and technologies to over 64,000 visitors. Among them were Chinese automakers Dongfeng Motor Corporation, Leapmotor, MG, and JAC Motors.

According to Namibia Press Agency, local consumer Hans Affeltranger expressed interest in purchasing a Chinese EV, citing their outstanding quality and competitive prices as a strong alternative to European brands. Patrick Von Bachelle, a Swiss importer of Leapmotor, emphasized the technological advancements and affordability of Chinese EVs, highlighting their design, comfort, and battery range as key advantages.

Sergio Kaufmann, an importer of Dongfeng Motor, shared similar views, praising the well-built vehicles and exceptional batteries of Chinese EVs. He noted their adaptability to Switzerland’s challenging cli
mate, particularly their performance in winter, due to comprehensive testing in China’s diverse geography and climate.

Dongfeng Motor has been selling EVs in Switzerland for over a year, operating through 10 dealers, with plans to increase to 25. Kaufmann reported strong sales data over the past 23 months, including 40 cars sold in recent days. Meanwhile, Leapmotor launched its EVs in Switzerland on Friday and has already established 20 local dealers, supported by the free trade agreement between China and Switzerland.

Bachelle remarked on the high quality of Leapmotor’s products, which have intrigued Swiss consumers who are eager to test drive and evaluate the vehicles in the coming months. He believes the entry of these brands will facilitate Switzerland’s transition towards affordable sustainable mobility.

Kaufmann highlighted the role of Chinese EVs in achieving zero emissions and sustainable development, particularly in protecting the environment and tourism resources. He expressed optimism about long
-term cooperation with Chinese automaker Dongfeng Motor, anticipating success in selling these products.
