The Eenhana Town Council has welcomed the decision by government to allocate N.dollars 6.4 million to the completion of the Eenhana Multi-Purpose Sport Complex.

The town council’s corporate communications officer Paul Shilongo said this in a recent interview with Nampa, after the Ministry of Youth, Sport and National Service announced that it has allocated the funds for the 2021/22 financial year.

The town council donated more than 10 hectares of land to the ministry to develop the complex 15 years ago in order to address the lack of sports facilities in the Ohangwena Region.

Construction started in 2009, but was halted due to financial constraints.

The land was cleared and fenced off and ground work and the construction of the pavilion completed before work stopped. The new funds will cater for the completion of phase two, which includes a football pitch, as well as tennis, basketball and netball courts.

Shilongo said the town council is ready and willing to render any necessary support for the completion of the project so people can start using the facility.

He could however not say when they expect the complex to be completed.

“We strongly believe that once completed, the stadium will immensely contribute to the improvement of the Ohangwena Region’s socio-economic situation and that of Eenhana in particular. Our people will have a conducive environment for their preferred sports codes. They will exercise and improve their physical fitness. Our youth, especially the out of school youth, will show their talents,” he stated.

He added that the stadium will contribute to the town’s vision of regional competitiveness and the goal of achieving an improved quality of life for residents through youth development.

“Council values the importance of sports. We not only view it as being about exercise to improve physical fitness, but also as a possible career. We dream of Eenhana and Ohangwena being competitors in the international arena and future hosts of tournaments at international and SADC level,” stated Shilongo.
