Namibia Mathematics Institute has equipped 85 teachers in the Oshikoto Region with new teaching approaches for mathematics, valued at N.dollars 25 000.

The initiative is aimed at assisting the education ministry by allowing teachers and learners to continue learning during the pandemic.

FNB Corporate Social Investment manager Revonia Kahivere in a media statement said due to a lack of technology, learners cannot receive face-to-face tuition when they are at home.

“Learners receive homework assignments for home days but very few learners can complete mathematics assignments without the physical support of a teacher,” she said.

Kahivere noted that mathematics is a subject many learners struggle with, adding that the results of Grade 7 learners in primary school determine their placement in secondary school and for many learners, Grade 11 is now their exit point.

“The weaker performers could possibly not qualify for further studies at institutions of higher learning in Namibia. At FNB we believe education should be the right of every child and we thus lend a helping hand where we can,” she said.

Namibia Mathematics Institute representative Peter Erwee was quoted in the statement as saying the participating teachers were under a lot of pressure to complete an extremely challenging syllabus, and many put in extra hours to empower the learners with the right knowledge.

“It was great to see teachers’ willingness to learn new teaching approaches and class participation was excellent. I am convinced that teachers will implement these materials in school,” he said.
