||Kharas Governor, Aletha Frederick on Wednesday launched a COVID-19 vaccination awareness campaign at Keetmanshoop.

The campaign will run for the month of July, and participants include Namibian Police Force officials, health officials and the governor’s youth task force members.

In an interview with the media here on Wednesday, Frederick said the campaign aims to raise awareness on the importance of vaccinating against COVID-19 as the region has thus far only managed to vaccinate five per cent of its inhabitants.

“The number of people vaccinated is very low and it is mainly due to false and misinformation on social media on the vaccination and that is why we have decided to do this campaign. We want the vaccination project to be effective, we are here to inform our people and mobilise our people on the ground. For now, we are concentrating on Keetmanshoop but we will also visit other places within the region that are hotspots,” she said.

The spokesperson of the governor’s youth task force, Innocent Pieter said the campaign will concentrate on the elderly and the young people.

“We are here to de-campaign the false information surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines and as young people we are meeting the government halfway by joining the governor’s office and play our part in this fight. It is really hurtful that you see young people going out and partying and this is destroying the ongoing efforts,” he said.

||Kharas had by Tuesday recorded 6 066 COVID-19 cases and 132 deaths, while 29 people were hospitalised. About 5 136 people had been vaccinated with their first dose, while 1 230 had received their second dose.
