Futsal Namibia League director Abisai Simon said the 2021/22 season has seen exciting fixtures and they cannot wait for play-offs to start in February.

The 2021/22 Express Credit Namibian Futsal League comprises 30 teams competing in three divisions at the Windhoek Showgrounds.

Simon told Nampa on Sunday that since the league’s inception in 2019 the quality of football has improved and teams are now more competitive.

“We have over 30 teams competing in three divisions namely the first division which is divided into A and B, a women’s division and an Under-17 division,’ he said adding that since the start of the 2021/22 season spectators have been watching competitive games as each team wants to make it to the playoffs.

The football game which is played on a hard court, smaller than a football pitch, and mainly indoors, competes for using league basis format and the top four teams in each group qualify to the knockout stages that determine the league winner.

Over the weekend 10 fixtures were played with the men’s A and B first divisions producing mouth watering action.

In the A category Faical and Glamorous Boys fought it out to a 9-5 score in favour of Faical, while the biggest scoreline of the weekend was in the men’s first division B leaders with Windhoek North Futsal who hammered Leopards 20-3.

The women’s division saw their matches postponed to other dates and the U17 boys’ category saw log leaders Swallows beating ACFA1, 8-1 while second on the log The Birds beat ACFA2, 8-5 to remain levelled on 15 points with the log leader.

Futsal administrators have a dream of running a Premier League nationwide by the end of 2022,but Simon said their goal at the moment is seeing all teams complete their league fixtures so that play-offs can start by February.

With similarities to five-a-side football, Futsal is played between two teams of five players each, one of whom is the goalkeeper and unlimited substitutions are permitted.
