President Hage Geingob, is set to officially open the seventh session of the seventh Parliament next week.

The opening on 14 February 2023 is in line with the provisions of Rule 15 of the Standing Rules and Orders of the National Assembly and Constitutional responsibilities, Speaker of the National Assembly, Peter Katjavivi said in a statement on Tuesday.

Twelve bills will potentially be tabled during the 2023 Parliament session.

Katjavivi said the ceremonial event on the calendar of the Parliament of the Republic of Namibia will take place under the theme ‘Enhancing Namibia’s Parliamentary Democracy Post COVID-19’. The official opening of Parliament brings together the three organs of the State – the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary.

For the past few years, Parliament was forced to scale down on the activities normally associated with the opening ceremony due to COVID-19. However, given the easing of restrictions, traditional activities associated with the event have been retained and will be observed this year.

Katjavivi reminded members of the public that all bills for discussion in the National Assembly emanate from the Executive, which has the constitutional responsibility and mandate to propose laws for the effective administration of Government.
